Day 1
Morning:
Pick up your car at Keflavik Airport. Touch down in Reykjavík, Iceland’s vibrant capital. After settling into your hotel, head out to explore the city. Start with a visit to Hallgrímskirkja, the towering church that offers panoramic views of the city from its spire. Thereafter go on a food walk tour in the city to grab a bite and enjoy a little bit of history on the go.
Afternoon:
Wander through the streets of downtown Reykjavík, exploring boutiques, cafés, and the Harpa Concert Hall with its stunning glass façade. Don’t miss the Sun Voyager sculpture by the waterfront, a symbol of exploration and adventure.
Evening:
Enjoy a dinner of fresh Icelandic seafood at a local restaurant, like Höfninn for example, before heading out for a stroll around Tjörnin, the city’s tranquil central lake, or the Pond as the locals call it.
Day 2
Morning:
Set off early for the Golden Circle, one of Iceland’s most popular tourist routes. Your first stop is Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where you can walk between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia.
Afternoon:
Next, visit the geothermal area of Geysir, home to the erupting Strokkur geyser. A short drive away is the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, where you can witness the power of nature as the Hvítá river plunges into a deep canyon.
Evening:
Return to Reykjavík and unwind with a soak in one of the city’s geothermal pools or the more luxurious Sky Lagoon.
Day 3
Morning:
Embark on a journey along Iceland’s South Coast, known for its black sand beaches and towering waterfalls. Your first stop is Seljalandsfoss, where you can walk behind the cascading water for a unique perspective.
Afternoon:
Continue to Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s largest waterfalls, and then visit the Reynisfjara black sand beach, famous for its basalt columns, contrasting colours and dramatic waves.
Evening:
Stay overnight in the charming village of Vík, where you can enjoy a quiet evening surrounded by the rugged beauty of the South Coast.
Day 4
Morning:
Drive towards Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park. Here, embark on a glacier hike to explore the stunning ice formations and crevasses of Europe’s largest glacier.
Afternoon:
After your hike, continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where you’ll see icebergs drifting in the serene, blue waters. Don’t forget to visit the nearby Diamond Beach, where ice chunks glitter on the black sand.
Evening:
Spend the night in the nearby town of Höfn, known for its delicious lobster dishes.
Day 5
Morning:
Leave the South Coast behind and head into the remote and less-travelled East Fjords. The drive is scenic, with winding roads that hug the coastline and offer stunning views of fjords and mountains.
Afternoon:
Arrive in Egilsstaðir, the largest town in East Iceland. Visit the Hallormsstaður Forest, Iceland’s largest forest, and take a dip in the Vök Baths, a unique geothermal spa on Lake Urriðavatn.
Evening:
Enjoy a relaxing evening in Egilsstaðir, perhaps with a dinner featuring local ingredients like reindeer and fresh berries.
Day 6
Morning:
Journey to the Mývatn region, known for its otherworldly landscapes. Explore the lava fields of Dimmuborgir, the geothermal area of Námaskarð, and the soothing Mývatn Nature Baths.
Afternoon:
Continue to the charming town of Akureyri, Iceland’s second-largest city. Stroll through the botanical gardens and enjoy the town’s vibrant café culture.
Evening:
Spend the night in Akureyri, with the possibility of catching the Northern Lights if conditions are right.
Day 7
Morning:
Drive back to Reykjavík via the scenic West Coast. Stop at the Borgarfjörður region, where you can explore the hot springs of Deildartunguhver and make a stop at the Kraumar baths for a quick lunch or a bath in the Kraumar spa.
Afternoon:
Continue to the beautiful Hraunfossar waterfalls, where water flows through a lava field. Stop at the shoplifter Art museum in Reykjavik for a colourful art installation which reminisces the inside of a lava cave.
Evening:
Enjoy a little bit of free time with dinner at one of the city´s great restaurants nearby and visit the Whale museum before heading back to the hotel to pack your bags for your early flight back in the morning.
